Batteries and charge that does not last
Short range, a buggy that fades on a hill, or one that will not hold a charge overnight usually points at the batteries, especially after a winter stood unused. Flooded lead-acid batteries need their water levels checked and topped with distilled water, and a set is only as strong as its weakest cell. Testing each cell under load is how you tell a tired battery from a bad connection, and it is worth doing before spending on a whole new set.

A buggy that will not take a charge is often the charger, the charging lead, or a blown charging fuse rather than the batteries themselves. Modern chargers refuse to start if they cannot see a minimum pack voltage, so a very flat pack can look like a dead charger. Check the lead, the fuse and the connections first; a charger that clicks but never delivers current wants testing properly.

A single click when you press the pedal, with no movement, is the solenoid connecting but nothing happening beyond it. That points at the solenoid contacts, the controller or the motor rather than the batteries. It needs test equipment to tell which, so guessing at parts here gets expensive quickly. This is the point to request an engineer.
Usually an engineerPower but no drive, or jerky drive
A working dashboard with no movement, or drive that surges and stutters, often traces to the speed controller or its inputs: the throttle sensor, the direction switch or the seat switch. A controller that has gone into a fault state sometimes shows a diagnostic flash code. These are diagnosed with a meter and, where the make supports it, a handset, not by swapping parts.
Usually an engineerWhining, grinding or a burning smell from the motor
Noise that grows with speed, a hot motor, or a burning smell suggests worn brushes, bearings or a motor under strain, often from being driven hard on soft ground. Stop using it if you smell burning and let it cool somewhere ventilated. A motor rebuild or replacement is an engineer job, but catching it early is usually the difference between brushes and a whole motor.
Usually an engineerWeak, uneven or noisy brakes
A longer stopping distance, a pedal that travels too far, or a squeal on braking points at worn shoes, a stretched cable or the brakes needing adjustment. Brakes are the one system where do-it-yourself guesswork is not worth the risk. Have them checked and set properly, because a buggy carrying passengers needs its stopping distance to be honest.
Usually an engineerPunctures and worn tyres
A slow puncture, a flat, or bald tyres are the most common thing that strands a buggy on the day. Pressures dropping over a winter is normal; a tyre that keeps going down wants the valve and the bead checked, not just reinflating. On grass, under-inflated tyres also dig in and lose grip, so it is worth checking pressures before an event as much as after a flat.
Often an owner checkPlay, pulling or stiffness in the steering
A steering wheel with slack in it, a buggy that pulls to one side, or heavy steering points at the track rod ends, the rack, or wheel alignment, often after a kerb or a pothole. A small amount of free play is normal; a lot, or a pull that fights you, is not. Alignment and worn joints are quick for an engineer to check and cheap to catch early.

Nothing at all when you turn the key, or power that comes and goes over bumps, is often the key switch, a main fuse, or a corroded connection rather than anything major. Standing unused and damp is the usual cause of corrosion on the terminals. Cleaning and tightening connections is a sensible first check before assuming the worst.
Often an owner checkFaults after rain or washing
Electrical gremlins that appear after rain or a jet wash are usually water where it should not be: in a connector, the controller housing or the charging socket. A buggy is water resistant, not waterproof, and a pressure washer aimed at the electronics is a common own goal. Let it dry fully, and if faults persist have the connections and seals checked.
