Most electric golf buggy faults trace back to one of four areas: the batteries and their connections, the charger, the controller and solenoid, or the motor and drivetrain. Start with the simplest and cheapest checks, the battery connections and charge state, before assuming the worst, because a loose terminal mimics a dead controller.

Work from simple to complex

The single most useful habit in buggy diagnosis is to resist jumping to the expensive conclusion. A buggy that is dead, or slow, or cutting out feels like a major fault, and it usually is not. A loose battery terminal produces exactly the same symptoms as a failed controller, and one costs nothing to fix while the other costs a great deal.

So the order matters. Charge state first, then connections, then the simple safety switches, then the charger, and only then the controller and motor. Following that order finds most faults in the first few steps and saves the rest from being misdiagnosed.

The battery is the usual suspect

An electric buggy is only as good as its battery set, and a tired or unevenly charged set is behind more faults than anything else. Batteries age, they lose capacity, and a single weak cell or battery drags the whole set down.

Check the state of charge first. If the buggy has sat unused for weeks, the batteries may simply be flat, and a flat set behaves like a comprehensive electrical failure. Put it on charge and see what changes before touching anything else.

Then check the terminals. Corrosion, looseness and a broken connector strap all interrupt the current and all imitate bigger faults. This is genuinely the highest-value check you can make.

The controller, solenoid and switches

If the battery is healthy and connected, the next area is the control side. When you press the pedal, a low-voltage signal tells the solenoid to close, which connects the batteries to the controller, which feeds the motor. A fault anywhere in that chain stops the buggy.

The audible clue is the solenoid. On a healthy buggy you hear a distinct click when you press the pedal from a standstill. No click often points at the solenoid, the pedal sensor, or one of the safety switches. A click but no movement points further along, at the controller or motor.

The safety switches are worth knowing about because they are simple and they fail. Most buggies will not move without a seat occupied and the direction selector properly engaged, and a faulty seat switch or selector will leave a perfectly healthy buggy refusing to go.

The charger

Charging faults split into two: the buggy will not charge, or it charges but does not hold it. The first is usually the charger, its lead, or the connection. The second is usually the batteries reaching the end of their life.

Before condemning a charger, check it is getting mains power and that its lead and plug are sound, and check the same connection on the buggy side. Chargers do fail, but a tripped socket or a damaged lead is far more common and far cheaper.

When to stop and call an engineer

Some faults are not diagnosis-from-an-article territory, and it is important to be honest about which. Anything affecting the brakes or the steering means the buggy should not be driven and should be looked at by an engineer, full stop. The same goes for any burning smell, any sign of overheating, and any damage to battery casings or leaking electrolyte.

Controller and motor faults, while not dangerous to investigate, are usually beyond a sensible home repair and need the right test equipment to diagnose properly rather than by swapping expensive parts and hoping.
