Solenoid faults explained

The solenoid is the main contactor that connects the battery pack to the controller when you ask for drive. A healthy one clicks once and holds. A dead one gives no click and no drive. A chattering one, clicking rapidly, usually means low voltage or a poor connection to its coil rather than a failed solenoid. The click tells you most of the story.

What the solenoid actually does
The controller manages how much power the motor gets, but it does not carry the full battery current through a delicate part on standby. That job falls to the solenoid, a heavy-duty electromagnetic switch. When you sit down and press the pedal, a small signal energises the solenoid's coil, and it snaps its main contacts closed to connect the battery pack to the controller. That snap is the click you hear. Lift off and shut down, and it opens again.
Because it is the gate for the main current, a solenoid that misbehaves stops the buggy dead or makes it behave erratically, and its click is one of the most useful sounds in buggy diagnosis.
Reading the click
Three outcomes cover most cases. A single firm click and the buggy drives means the solenoid is doing its job. A single firm click but no drive means the solenoid is closing but power is not getting through, which points at failed or burnt contacts inside it, or at the controller or motor beyond it. No click at all means the coil is not being energised, which sends you upstream to the seat switch, the pedal micro-switch, the key switch or the wiring that feeds the coil, as much as to the solenoid itself.
So the click narrows the search quickly. It tells you whether the fault is at the solenoid, before it, or after it.
The chatter
A distinctive fault is rapid chattering, the solenoid buzzing in and out instead of holding closed. This is rarely a failed solenoid. It usually means the coil is not getting enough steady voltage to hold the contacts shut, so the moment they close and load the pack, the voltage sags, the coil lets go, the voltage recovers, and it pulls in again, over and over. The usual root causes are a low or tired battery set and poor or corroded connections. Fix the supply and the chatter usually goes.

Testing and replacing
A solenoid can be tested properly with a meter: checking the coil, and checking for voltage drop across the main terminals when it is closed under load. A large drop across a closed solenoid means burnt contacts and a solenoid due for replacement. Replacing one is a recognised job, but it involves working on the main battery cables, which carry serious current, so it wants respect and a safe method rather than a casual poke. If you are confident and careful the swap is achievable, and if you are not, this is a sensible one to hand to an engineer, particularly since a misdiagnosed solenoid means paying for a part that was never the problem.

- No click means the solenoid coil is not being energised, so the fault may be upstream: the seat switch, pedal micro-switch, key switch or the wiring to the coil, rather than the solenoid itself. Work back through those safety switches before condemning the solenoid.

- A firm click with no movement means the solenoid is closing but power is not passing, which points at burnt internal contacts, or a fault beyond it in the controller or motor. Those need proper testing to separate, so this is a good point to involve an engineer rather than guess at expensive parts.

- Chattering usually means the coil cannot get a steady enough supply to hold the contacts shut, most often from a low battery set or poor connections, not a failed solenoid. Check the battery charge and clean and tighten the connections first, because replacing the solenoid rarely cures a chatter caused by supply.
