If a buggy drives forward but will not reverse, the fault is specific to the reverse direction, which points at the forward-reverse switch, its wiring, or the reverse circuit rather than the battery, motor or controller. Those are shared, so a fault in them would stop forward drive too. The direction switch and its contacts are the first place to look.

The logic of one direction failing

This fault is easier to place than most, because of what it rules out. The battery, solenoid, controller and motor are all used in both directions, so if any of them had failed, the buggy would not drive forward either. The fact that forward works proves the shared drive path is healthy. That leaves the parts used only for reverse: the direction selector, its wiring, and anything specific to the reverse circuit. The problem has narrowed itself before you have touched a spanner.

The forward-reverse switch

The direction selector, a rocker, a lever or a switch depending on the buggy, tells the controller or the motor which way to drive. Inside it are contacts for each direction, and those contacts wear and corrode. It is entirely possible for the forward contacts to be fine while the reverse contacts have become dirty, pitted or broken, which gives you exactly this symptom: forward yes, reverse no. Cleaning or replacing the switch cures a good share of these, and testing it confirms whether the fault is in the switch itself or in the wiring to it.

The wiring and the reverse circuit

If the switch tests good, the wiring from it into the controller or motor for the reverse direction is next, since a broken or corroded connection on the reverse side alone gives the same result. On some buggies there is also a reverse-specific element, such as the way the controller is signalled to reverse, that can fault independently of forward. These are more involved to trace, and are where an engineer with the wiring diagram earns their visit.

Do not be misled by the buzzer

One thing catches people out. Many buggies sound a buzzer or beeper when in reverse, and if that buzzer is silent, an owner sometimes assumes reverse is not engaging when in fact the buggy would reverse but the buzzer circuit has failed. The buzzer is a separate warning device, so a quiet reverse is not proof the drive is not there. Check whether the buggy actually moves in reverse, gently and safely, rather than judging by the sound alone. And if it will not reverse and you drive on multiple direction attempts, do it with care and space, because a direction fault that suddenly clears can surprise you with movement the wrong way.
