The three documents people mean by manual
Ask for a manual and you may be handed any of three quite different books. The owner or operator handbook covers driving, charging, daily checks and the things a user should not do. The service or maintenance manual is written for a technician and carries adjustment procedures, torque figures, test sequences, wiring diagrams and fault code tables. The parts catalogue is a numbered exploded view whose only job is to get the correct component ordered, and it contains almost no instructions at all.
Knowing which one you need saves a great deal of searching. Most ordinary owner questions are answered inside the handbook. Anything involving brakes, steering, high current, charging systems or controller settings needs the service manual, and ordering a component needs the catalogue. Why the manual has to match the machine, not the badge
Model names outlive the machines underneath them. Working out which manual applies
The vehicle will tell you, if you look in the right place. Somewhere on the frame, under a seat, inside a body panel or around the dash surround there is a plate or a stamped serial carrying the model code and a build identifier. Makers differ in where they put it and in how the code reads, and some encode the year or the production batch inside the serial itself. Photograph it properly and keep the photograph somewhere you will find it again.

What the manual will not settle

It does not say what your insurer requires, what a club or a venue permits on its own ground, or what an employer must do before letting staff drive one at work. Those answers belong to the insurer, the venue, and the duties an employer already carries.
It is also not a substitute for competence. A service manual assumes a technician with the tools, the training and the test equipment the procedure names. Reading a sequence is not the same as being able to carry it out and then verify the result afterwards, and brakes, steering and anything carrying serious current are poor places to discover the difference. Add to it every time anything is done. The most useful entry is usually the dullest one: the date a battery set went in, the date a controller was replaced, the fact that a wiring repair was made near the motor. Whoever works on the machine in three years will be trying to reconstruct exactly that, and without the note they will be charging you for the time it takes to find out what you already knew.
