Petrol or electric, and why it comes first

Get underneath with a torch. Look at the frame rails, the crossmembers, the suspension mounting points and the area beneath the battery tray or the engine. You are looking for scaling and for repairs rather than for surface rust, and for anything that has been welded or bracketed back together. Structural corrosion is the fault that turns a cheap machine into an expensive one, because the labour does not care what you paid for the vehicle.

A buggy that carried two golfers round a mown course has had an easier life than one that spent several winters crossing a field with a load on the back, and the calendar will not tell you the difference. The drive and the paperwork

Drive it the way it will be used, and on ground like the ground it will work on if you can. Loaded, up a slope, from a standstill. Listen at full lock, feel the brakes from speed, and see whether the machine holds where it is put with the park brake set. Then settle the paperwork. Get the serial number, a plain statement that the seller owns the machine and that it is not subject to finance, and whatever service history exists, even if that turns out to be a folder of receipts in no order.
