  The arrival, and why it works

  Prom arrivals have become an event in themselves, and a buggy fits that better than it first appears. Where the venue has a sweep of steps or a lit entrance, a buggy delivering students to the door in twos and fours makes the arrival feel considered rather than a scramble across a car park. It is calmer than it sounds, because a driven buggy running a short loop moves a queue of arrivals steadily without anyone rushing. It also solves a genuine problem at venues where the drop-off is nowhere near the door. Hotels and function venues often route cars and coaches to a car park a walk from the entrance, and a buggy bridges that in formalwear and in the dark without long dresses trailing across tarmac.

  Who drives, and the safeguarding line

  This is the point that matters most and the one that separates a prom from any other party. We supply a trained driver for prom hires, or the buggy is driven by a named, briefed adult the school has appointed. Students do not drive. That is not negotiable at a school event, and any supplier who offers to let them is not one to use. The school's own supervision arrangements sit alongside ours. Staff or chaperones oversee the students; our driver oversees the vehicle. Agree in advance who is responsible for what, where the buggy loads and unloads, and the route it takes, so the evening runs to a plan rather than to improvisation at the door.

  The venue and the evening

  Proms happen at hotels, function suites and occasionally at the school itself, and they run in the evening, which brings the after-dark points into play. The buggy needs lights, the route needs to be clear of where students are gathering on foot, and a low speed is the rule around a crowd of excited teenagers. None of this is difficult, it just needs to be planned rather than assumed. Ground is rarely the issue at a prom, because these venues have made-up surfaces. The constraint is more often the crowd and the lighting than the terrain, which is the reverse of a marquee wedding and worth saying plainly so the planning goes to the right place.

  Booking a prom

  Prom season is concentrated into a few weeks in the summer, so vehicles and drivers book up. If you are organising a prom, enquire early, tell us the venue, the drop-off arrangement and the numbers, and whether you want us to supply the driver, which for a school event we would recommend. We will price it as a driven hire with the arrangement stated plainly on the quote.

Common questions

Can students drive the buggy themselves at a prom?

No. At a school or college event the students are usually under eighteen and the buggy is a vehicle, so it is driven by a trained driver from us or a named responsible adult the school appoints. Any supplier offering to let students drive is not one to use.

What does a prom buggy actually do?

It turns the arrival into an occasion and bridges the walk from a distant drop-off to the venue door, in formalwear and in the evening. A driven buggy runs a short loop delivering students to the entrance steadily rather than everyone crossing a dark car park at once.

Do you supply the driver?
