On soft, freshly laid or waterlogged ground, any vehicle marks, and no supplier should tell you otherwise. So the honest planning starts with the state of the lawn. If the grass is mature and the weather has been dry, a buggy is fine. If the ground is soft, newly turfed or the forecast is wet, we plan a route on the firmest ground and the paths, keep the vehicle off the most delicate areas entirely, and in the worst case tell you the garden is better served on foot for that party.   Plan the route, not just the hire

  A garden party route is a deliberate thing. Rather than letting a buggy wander wherever a guest points it, agree the paths it uses in advance: the drive, the mown paths, the firmer edges, and the points it turns, because turning is what tears turf. Keeping the vehicle to a planned loop protects the borders and the finer lawns while still covering the distances that matter. If the garden has a mix of hard paths and grass, the buggy should favour the paths and cross grass only where it must. A short section of lawn crossed in a straight line at low speed is very different from a vehicle circling on the grass all afternoon.

  What the buggy actually does at a garden party

  Two jobs, usually. The first is guests, and particularly older guests, who at a garden party face a long walk across uneven ground from parking to the party and back. The second, often overlooked, is the caterers and staff, who move food, drink, glasses and equipment across the same distance repeatedly through the day. For guest movement a lighter 2 or 4 seater is often the better choice on delicate ground than a big people-mover, because less weight means gentler treatment of the turf.
