The four families of load carrier

Almost every carrying accessory for a buggy is one of four things. A fixed box is a tray or a deep-sided container bolted where the bag rack sat, with a lid or without one. A tipping bed is the same footprint on a hinge, released by a catch so it pivots and empties. A rack is an open frame with rails and tie-down points and little floor to speak of. A lockable case is a smaller sealed box, often fitted alongside one of the others.

They solve different problems, and the mistake is buying for the hardest day rather than for the ordinary one. A tipping bed answers loose material and becomes an irritation for everything else, because a hinged floor is a floor that moves. An open rack answers long items and does nothing for anything that rolls. Plenty of grounds teams settle on a fixed bed plus a small locked case, because that pair fits the working week rather than the exceptional job.

Matching the carrier to what the team moves

Start with a week rather than a wish list. Write down what actually goes on the vehicle between Monday and Friday: bags of dressing, hand tools, a strimmer and its fuel, hose, flags and cups, bin bags, wet waterproofs, a radio. Then look at the shapes. Loose material wants a tipping bed. Long-handled tools want rails to clip to rather than a deep box to lie across. Fuel and chemicals want a container that can be strapped down and that drains.

The second question is how often it gets loaded. A deep box with a high lip is fine for the occasional load and punishing for a team filling and emptying it all day. Reaching over a tall side with something heavy is where backs get hurt, and a shallow bed with a drop-down tailgate gets used properly where a deep one gets used badly. Ergonomics look like a soft consideration right up to the point the team starts leaving the box empty and carrying things on the seat.

Why position upsets a buggy before weight does

A buggy has a short wheelbase, a narrow track, a high seating position and its load behind the rear axle. Anything hung off that overhang works as a lever. Add weight there and it presses the rear axle down while lifting the front, and the wheels losing grip are the ones that steer. The symptom is a wheel that goes light and a machine that runs wide on a turn, and it turns up long before anything approaches a weight limit.

Height does a different kind of damage. Raising the load raises the centre of gravity of the whole vehicle, and that is what governs behaviour on a cross-slope. A modest load carried high in a tall box is worse on a bank than a heavier load carried low in a shallow tray. Given a choice between a deep box and a wide flat bed of the same capacity, the flat bed is the kinder fitting on sloping ground.

Side bias is the third one and the easiest to cure. Loading a single heavy item against one side of the bed happens naturally, because that is the side the person is standing on, and it tips the machine before it has moved. Loading towards the middle and as far forward as the shape allows costs nothing and removes most of the problem.

Tipping beds and the moment they are least stable

A tipping bed saves a grounds team a great deal of shovelling and introduces one genuinely risky moment. As the bed rises, the load slides backwards and upwards, so the centre of gravity travels rearward and higher at the same time. That is the point at which a machine already parked on a slope can lighten its front wheels. Tipping on level ground removes almost all of it.

Two habits go with that. Tip downhill of where the material is going, so gravity does the emptying rather than somebody leaning in to help it. And keep people clear of the back, because a wet load lets go all at once and a released catch on a loaded bed moves faster than expected. Check the catch and the strut with the same attention given to the brakes, since a bed that drops on its own is the failure that hurts somebody.

Restraining a load so it stays where you put it

An unrestrained load causes more trouble than its weight suggests, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to fix. Under braking everything in the bed moves forward, and on a buggy the thing it stops against is a thin panel with the driver's back on the other side. Under cornering it moves sideways and takes the balance with it. A load that cannot move is safer than one half its weight that can.

Ratchet straps beat bungee cords for anything with mass behind it, and the ratchets want to live on the vehicle rather than in a store. The arrangement that works is the one the team will use without being watched, which usually means fewer, larger anchor points rather than a neat row of small ones. Materials, drainage and the mess of grounds work

Steel beds take abuse and can be welded when they are damaged. Polymer beds do not corrode, run quieter, and forgive a load dropped in from height, and they are awkward to repair once cracked. Aluminium sits between the two. On a machine that carries fertiliser, dressing or salt, corrosion resistance earns more than absolute strength, because the fixings and the floor seams go first.

Drainage decides whether the box is pleasant to use. A sealed bed with no outlet holds every drop of rain and every washdown, and the contents sit in it. Drain holes in the corners, or a bed that tips to empty, save a weekly job. Check where that water goes when it leaves, because straight onto a battery tray or a wiring loom is a slow way to build an electrical fault.

Locking up, and who is responsible for the contents

A lockable case changes the conversation about theft. Once tools are locked on the vehicle they tend to stay on the vehicle, which is convenient and which quietly moves the risk. Where the buggy is hired, check what the agreement says about property left on it, because cover for the vehicle and cover for its contents are usually two separate things and the second is often absent.

Keys are the practical failure. A case whose key lives on the vehicle keyring is not locked in any useful sense, and one whose key lives in an office is a case nobody bothers to open. A combination, or a keyed-alike set across the fleet, tends to survive contact with a real working week. If the machine sits out overnight, a locked case is not a substitute for putting the vehicle somewhere enclosed.

Ratings, and where the honest figure comes from

Two ratings apply and the lower one wins. The accessory has a rating from whoever made it, and the vehicle has a total laden weight in the maker's manual and usually on a plate on the machine. Driver, passengers, the box itself and its contents all count towards the second. It is common for a large bed to be rated well above what the buggy underneath it should carry, and bolting the bed on does not raise the vehicle's figure.

Take them from the manual, the plate and the supplier of the box, add up what is really carried including the wet weight of anything that soaks up rain, and where the sums come out close, the answer is a second trip rather than a fuller bed.

Common questions

Can I fit a cargo box to a standard golf buggy?
Usually, where there is a rear rack or a factory mounting frame to work from. Kits are model-specific because the mounting points differ, so quote the model and generation when asking. What no fitting can do is raise what the vehicle is rated to carry, so read the rating in the maker's manual before choosing the size of the box.
Is a tipping bed worth it for a small team?
It depends on whether loose material is a regular job. For a team moving dressing, soil, clippings or gravel most weeks, a tipper saves real time and real backs. For a team mostly carrying tools, a hinged floor is a moving part that adds nothing but maintenance. Count the loose-material jobs in a normal month and decide from that.
How much can a golf buggy carry?
The figure lives on the vehicle rather than in a guide. Every machine has a total laden weight from its maker, and driver, passengers, fitted accessories and the load all count towards it. Keep the two separated, restrain the cargo properly, and remember that people and kit together reach the weight limit faster than either does alone.
Does a cargo box affect range?
A heavier vehicle takes more from each charge, and the effect is larger on hills and soft ground than on level tarmac. Lead-acid packs feel it more than lithium, because they give up usable capacity faster under a heavy current draw. If a loaded machine is working a full day, plan the charging around the load rather than around the calendar.
