An electric utility vehicle is a low-speed work vehicle built around a load bed rather than around passengers. It shares its motor, batteries and chassis thinking with a passenger buggy but is specified by payload, bed size and gradient rather than by seats. In the UK they are bought mostly by grounds teams, farms, estates, warehouses, councils and holiday parks, and they are chosen against a diesel gator or a compact tractor rather than against another electric machine.

What separates a utility vehicle from a golf buggy

The mechanical parts are close cousins. Both run a low-voltage electric motor, a battery pack under the seat or the bed, and a chassis designed for private ground at low speed. The difference is what the machine is arranged around. A passenger buggy is arranged around a bench and a canopy. A utility vehicle is arranged around a flat deck, and everything else is subordinate to it.

That shows up in the specification. A buggy sheet leads with seats and range. A utility sheet leads with bed load, bed dimensions and gradient, because those are what decide whether the job is possible at all. It also shows up in the suspension and the tyres, which are set up for a loaded rear axle rather than for a smooth ride on a mown surface.

The practical test is simple. If the thing you need to move is people, you want a buggy. If it is soil, tools, linen, bins, staging or feed, you want a bed, and the number of seats becomes a question of how many people travel with it.

The four numbers that actually decide it

Payload first. It is the weight the bed is rated to carry, and it is the figure that rules models in or out before anything else is considered. Bed length second, because volume and weight are different constraints and most jobs hit one long before the other. A long bed at 1.8 metres carries fencing, staging and pipe that a short bed simply cannot take, whatever the rating says.

Range third. Our utility machines run between 60 and 85 km depending on model, roughly 37 to 53 miles. That is quoted level and unladen, so treat it as a ceiling rather than a promise.

Gradient fourth, and it is the one people forget. A machine rated to climb a 30 per cent gradient will manage a steep estate track. One that is not will stall on it with a full bed, which is an expensive way to learn the number.

Who actually buys them

Grounds and landscape teams are the largest single group, because the work is repetitive, spread across a site and mostly under the weight where a tractor becomes necessary. Farms and smallholdings come next, usually replacing a quad or an ageing gator on the jobs that do not need either.

After that it broadens: warehouses and distribution sites moving stock between buildings, councils and parks departments, university and hospital campuses, garden centres, holiday parks and caravan sites, and hotels running housekeeping and maintenance across grounds.

What those have in common is distance without road. The vehicle is not replacing a van, it is replacing walking, and the case for it is made in hours of staff time rather than in fuel.

Where an electric one is the wrong answer

If the machine has to spend real time on public roads, an unmodified utility vehicle is not the tool. Road use means registration, lighting, insurance and a driver holding the right licence category, and most of these machines are not built to be registered without work.

If the load routinely exceeds the top of the range, the honest answer is a compact tractor or a pickup. A 500 kg bed is a great deal for site work and a small figure next to a trailer.

And if the site has nowhere sensible to charge, the vehicle will be a nuisance whatever its specification. That is worth resolving before the order rather than after it.

Not quite. UTV usually describes a faster, four wheel drive machine built for rough ground, where utility vehicle usually describes a slower load carrier for made surfaces and grass.
