Electric wins on running cost, noise, emissions at the point of use and access to places a diesel is not welcome. Diesel still wins on refuelling in minutes, on very long working days, and on the heaviest loads. The decision usually turns on four things: how far the machine travels in a day, whether it can charge where it stands, whether noise matters, and how heavy the heaviest regular load is.

Where electric clearly wins

Noise. An electric work vehicle can cross a hotel lawn at seven in the morning, work beside a wedding ceremony, or move through a hospital campus without announcing itself. On a site with guests, patients, students or residents, that alone often decides it.

Enclosed spaces. No exhaust means the machine can work inside a warehouse, a glasshouse, a market hall or an underground car park, which a diesel cannot do safely without ventilation.

Where diesel still wins

Continuous long days. A diesel refuels in minutes and carries on. An electric machine needs hours on charge, and a site running two shifts either needs two machines, an opportunity charging plan, or a diesel.

How many miles or hours does the machine actually do in a working day. Measure it rather than estimate it; most sites are surprised how low the real figure is.

Can it charge where it stands overnight, on an ordinary supply, without anybody having to remember anything.

Does noise matter here, to guests, neighbours, residents or livestock.

What is the heaviest load it must carry regularly, and does that sit inside the electric range at all.
