Two different questions hide behind the same word. On a public road, lighting is a legal specification: particular lamps, of an approved type, in specified positions, doing specified things, on a vehicle that is itself approved, registered and insured, and a lamp set fitted to a machine failing those other tests changes nothing. On private ground there is no such specification. The job there is simply to see and be seen, which a working light set, reflective markings, an amber beacon and a slower pace handle well.

Two questions sharing one word

Almost every enquiry about buggy lighting is really one of two very different questions, and separating them saves a lot of wasted effort. The first is whether a machine can be used on a public road, where lighting is a legal specification and only one part of a much longer list. The second is how to run safely on private ground after dark, where there is no such specification and the only real test is practical.

The confusion is understandable, because the parts look identical. The same lamp can be entirely adequate for a dark car park and entirely irrelevant to whether a vehicle may be on a road. What changes is not the lamp, it is what is being asked of the vehicle it is fitted to.

This guide takes the road question first, because that is the one where getting it wrong carries consequences, then deals with private ground, which is genuinely simpler than people expect.

What road lighting law asks for

Lighting requirements for vehicles used on roads in Great Britain are set out in the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations, and the important thing to understand is that they do not impose one list on every vehicle. What is required depends on the class of vehicle, so no general article can hand you your list. What can be described is the shape of the requirement, which is consistent even where the detail is not.

Four separate things are being asked at once, and a lamp set can satisfy one while failing another.

  • Which lamps: front and rear position lamps, headlamps, stop lamps, direction indicators with something telling the driver they are working, hazard warning, rear reflectors, a lamp for the number plate, and fog lamps for some classes.
  • What type: lamps of an approved type, usually identified by an approval mark moulded into the lens rather than by a claim on the packaging.
  • Where: heights above the ground, distance in from the edge of the vehicle, separation between the pair, and matched positioning left and right.
  • How they behave: correct colours, correct combinations switching together, indicators flashing within the required rate, and everything required actually working.

Why a lamp kit is not compliance

A kit that contains genuinely approved lamps is a useful thing to own and it is not the same as making a vehicle road legal. Lighting is one requirement among many, sitting alongside braking, structure, restraints, identity, registration, tax, insurance and the driver's licence. A machine that fails any of those is not permitted on a road however well it is lit.

There is a second trap inside the lighting requirement itself. Fitting the right lamps in the wrong positions, or wiring them so that a pair does not operate together, produces a vehicle that fails inspection with a full set of correct parts on it. Position and behaviour are assessed, not just presence, and that is exactly the kind of detail an approval inspection exists to catch.

Colour, position and the lamps you must not fit

The colour rules are the part most likely to catch out a well-meaning fit, and they run in both directions. Broadly, a road vehicle should not show red light to the front and should not show white light to the rear, the exceptions to the rear being the reversing lamp and the lamp that illuminates the number plate. That single principle rules out a great many convenient ideas about where to mount a spare work lamp.

It also means that adding a lamp can create an offence rather than solve a problem. A work light or light bar that is entirely sensible on a private site becomes something that has to be dealt with before the same vehicle goes on a road, whether by removal, by masking, or by wiring it so it cannot be used there. Beacons have their own rules about which vehicles may use them on a road, so treat a beacon as a question to check rather than an accessory to buy.

Aim is the last of it, and it is worth doing properly even where nobody will inspect it. A lamp mounted low on a buggy and pointed level throws light into the eyes of anybody approaching, which makes the machine less safe rather than more. Aim down, walk in front of it in the dark, and adjust until you can see the ground without being dazzled.

The electrical side of fitting lamps to a buggy

A buggy's traction pack runs at a voltage chosen for its motor, and that is generally not the voltage automotive lamps and accessories expect. Fitting a road-style lamp set therefore involves a converter of adequate rating, proper fusing on the accessory side, cable sized for the run, and a return path that suits a machine whose frame may not be used as an earth in the way a car's is. This is auto-electrician work rather than an afternoon with a crimping tool.

One specific behaviour catches people out. A flasher unit expects a certain electrical load, so replacing filament indicator lamps with low-draw ones can make the indicators flash too fast, too slowly, or not at all. The fix is a flasher unit intended for the load being used, or an added load, and it is a genuine compliance point rather than a cosmetic one because flash rate is part of what is specified.

Two practical points remain. Accessory load comes out of the same pack that drives the machine, so a lamp set reduces the range available for driving, which matters most in cold weather when there was less to spare. And buggies live outside and get washed, so every connection wants proper sealing rather than the insulating tape that looks fine in the workshop and fails in February.

Lighting for private ground after dark

On private land none of the road specification applies. There is no required lamp list, no approval mark to look for and no inspection. What governs instead is the landowner's own rules, and a club, venue or estate is entitled to require more than the law would, which is often sensible where machines and people share the same paths after an evening event.

The objective is different too. On a road, lighting is largely about being seen by other traffic. On a dark site, the harder half is being seen by people on foot, because an electric buggy makes almost no noise and gives them nothing to hear. Everything useful follows from that.

  • Light the ground you will actually reach at the speed you are driving, not the far horizon.
  • A working red lamp at the rear matters more than a brighter one at the front where people walk behind you.
  • Reflective tape on the rear, the flanks and the roof struts, because it works from angles a lamp does not cover.
  • An amber beacon where machines mix with people on foot, which is convention on working sites rather than law.
  • Aim everything down. Dazzling somebody is worse than not lighting them.
  • Stick to routes driven in daylight. Darkness removes the detail of the ground, not the hazards in it.

Being seen when the lights are not on

Lamps only help while the machine is running and the pack has charge in it. The awkward moments on a dark site are the other ones: a buggy parked at the edge of a path, a machine that has stopped with a flat pack, a vehicle left by a marquee while the driver helps somebody in. Those are exactly the situations where somebody walks into it.

Passive marking covers that gap and costs almost nothing. Retro-reflective tape on the rear, on both flanks and on the roof structure catches a torch, a phone screen or headlights from angles that a fitted lamp does not reach, and it goes on working with the key out and the battery empty. Put it where a person's eye level actually is, which on a buggy usually means the roof struts as well as the body.

The same logic applies to whoever is driving. A high-visibility vest on a driver working a dark event does more for safety than an additional lamp on the machine, because most near misses on site involve somebody stepping into a path rather than a collision between two vehicles.

Getting it checked, and by whom

Three different authorities answer three different parts of this, and mixing them up is how people end up confidently wrong. The machine's own maker, through its manual and technical support, is the authority on what the electrical system will take and what fitting accessories does to any warranty. A competent auto-electrician is the right person to do the work. And for road use, DVSA and the approval process decide whether the finished vehicle passes, not the person who fitted the parts.

If the machine is insured, tell the insurer about a lighting installation. Insurers take a view on modifications, and a fit disclosed at the time is a different conversation from one discovered during a claim. That applies on private ground as much as on a road.

For hire, the useful thing is to ask at booking rather than on the evening. Models differ in what lighting they carry as standard, some carry none because they were built for daylight rounds, and matching the machine to an event that runs past dusk is straightforward when it is known in advance and awkward when it is not.
