Buggy tracks, ground protection and repairing the damage

A buggy track appears where the same line is driven repeatedly, particularly on wet ground and at turning points. The cheapest fix is routing rather than surfacing: vary the line, avoid soft ground, and place turning points on hard standing. Where a route is fixed, temporary trackway or a permanent path is the answer, and both are cheaper than repairing a fairway every spring.

How a track forms
A single pass over healthy turf compresses it and it recovers. The damage comes from repetition: the same wheels over the same line, day after day, compacting the soil until water cannot drain and the grass cannot recover between passes.
Once compaction sets in, the track holds water, which makes the next pass worse. That feedback is why a faint line in September is a rut in January.
Gateways, corners and turning points
Damage concentrates wherever vehicles funnel or turn: gateways, the ends of paths, the approach to a store, and anywhere the route bends sharply. These points take a disproportionate share of the total wear and they are the cheapest to treat.
Hard standing at a gateway or a turning circle costs little and removes most of a site's visible damage. It is usually a better first spend than surfacing a whole route.
Protection for a route you cannot move
For events, temporary trackway spreads the load across the surface and is lifted afterwards. It is the standard answer for a route that has to carry traffic for a fortnight and then be a lawn again.
For a route used all year, a permanent path is cheaper over any reasonable horizon than repeated repair, and it can be built in materials that suit the setting rather than in tarmac.

Repairing what is already there
Compacted ground needs relieving before reseeding, or the new grass fails the same way. Aeration first, then topdressing and seed, then keeping traffic off it while it establishes.
That last part is the one that fails. A repaired track with vehicles back on it in a fortnight is a track again by the end of the season, so the route has to change while the repair takes.
