What a buggy can handle

A buggy is more capable than people expect on firm difficult ground. It manages a firm slope at a steady pace, a rough but solid track, a cobbled courtyard driven gently, an uneven but dry lawn, and gentle gradients under load without trouble. On made-up or firm ground, quite a lot of unevenness is comfortably within a buggy's range, provided the driver takes it at a sensible speed.

Slopes are the interesting case. A buggy climbs and descends a reasonable gradient perfectly well when the ground is firm and the vehicle is capable, and on a slope the vehicle and the battery matter, because a loaded buggy climbing draws hard. A healthy, capable buggy on a firm slope is fine; the same slope wet or the same buggy tired is a different story.

What a buggy cannot handle

Here is the honest limit. A buggy cannot manage deep mud, a severe sustained gradient, badly broken or deeply rutted ground, loose sand, or a waterlogged field. These are not a matter of driving carefully, they are beyond what a standard buggy is built for, and sending one into them means a stuck vehicle, which at a wedding is a worse problem than not having a buggy at all.

Ground clearance and traction set these limits, and no amount of optimism changes them. Where your site includes ground like this, the answer is not to send a buggy and hope, it is to plan the route on the parts a buggy can manage and accept that the worst ground is a walking job, or occasionally that a buggy is not right for your site. We would always rather tell you that in advance than recover a bogged vehicle during your reception.

Describe the worst, not the average

The single most useful thing you can do is describe the worst of your ground rather than the average. Couples naturally describe a venue as they experienced it on a dry open day, but the buggy has to cope with the muddiest gateway, the steepest pull and the roughest track on the route, and it is those that decide the vehicle.
