The Tank Museum holds around 300 armoured vehicles across a series of very large halls, with an arena outside where vehicles run in front of crowds. On live event weekends the site becomes a showground, with camps, traders and a vehicle park well beyond the buildings.

About The Tank Museum

The museum sits on the heath at Bovington beside the Army's armour training centre, and holds one of the largest collections of armoured vehicles anywhere. It runs as a visitor attraction, a conference and events venue, and a live event site.

A museum built from several large halls plus an outdoor arena is a campus rather than a building. Visitors cover long distances between exhibitions, the arena and the entrance, and staff, volunteers and workshop teams cross the same ground with parts and equipment through the year.

Event weekends change the scale again, spreading the crowd, traders, living history camps and vehicle parking across a footprint that the crew running it cross all day.

Access and getting around

Hardstanding and made roadways throughout the museum site, with the arena and its surrounds built to carry heavy vehicles. That is dependable going in weather that would rule out a grass site.

The surrounding heath is Ministry of Defence training land including live firing ranges and is entirely off limits except where publicly opened. That is their access regime, not ours.
