About Stowe

The National Trust landscape garden covers around 250 acres within a wider parkland, laid out with lakes, wooded valleys and monuments including the Palladian Bridge. The features are spread widely, so moving between the visitor building, the house and the monuments is a genuine walk across the valley.

For a wedding or a private function using the grounds, the distances between the dispersed parts of the landscape are the thing to plan around, and a buggy carries guests across them rather than leaving them to walk the full circuit.

Access and getting around

The ground is predominantly grass, gravel and parkland paths across gently undulating terrain with lake margins, and distances from the entrance to the monuments are long. Firm routes across the landscape are worth planning.

The gardens are owned by the National Trust and the house is run separately by the Stowe House Preservation Trust and Stowe School, so any vehicle use across the grounds is agreed with the relevant body, and we work to their rules.
