The Eden Project occupies a worked-out china clay pit in mid Cornwall, with biomes, outdoor gardens and an arena laid out down the sides of a bowl. Everything sits below the entrance, so arriving is easy and leaving is a climb, and the distances are considerable.

About Eden Project

The site runs to around 35 acres of biomes, terraced gardens, a core education building and an arena used for concerts and winter events. It operates as a visitor attraction, a conference venue and a wedding venue, and each of those puts people and equipment across the same steep ground.

A crater is an unusual shape for a venue and it produces an unusual problem. The walk down from the entrance to the biome doors is long and it is downhill, which means every visitor faces the return climb whether they planned for it or not. The site runs a land train for that reason.

Arena events add a build and breakdown phase on top of the daytime operation, with staging, production and traders moving through the same routes as visitors, often outside opening hours and in winter.

Access and getting around

The made roadways and paths through the site are firm and built to carry service traffic alongside crowds. Gradient rather than surface is the constraint, and on a site built into a pit it applies to most routes, particularly with a load on board.

Which routes work is worth mapping before the day rather than assuming the whole pit is reachable. Any vehicle movement is the operator's decision on their own site.

How far is the Eden Project from your depot

St Blazey is about 240 miles by road from our Bracknell depot, which is one of the longest runs we make. Because the delivery costs the same whether a vehicle stays two days or two months, a seasonal or event-length hire prices considerably better than a single day.

Can a buggy manage a site built into a pit

On the graded made roadways, within limits. Gradient is the hard constraint on this kind of vehicle and a bowl means slopes on most routes. We would rather look at the actual road layout and be specific about which sections work than promise the whole site.

Do you supply for arena concerts as well as daytime operations

Yes. Build and breakdown are usually when the vehicles work hardest, moving staging, cable and welfare across a site that already has its own visitor traffic. Hiring across the whole period rather than the event nights alone is normally the better arrangement.
