Hire versus buy

The honest answer to hire or buy is that it depends on how many days a year you need one, and the crossover is further out than most people expect. A buggy used for a handful of days a year almost never justifies ownership once you account for servicing, battery replacement, insurance, and somewhere dry to keep it for the other fifty weeks.

Ownership starts to make sense when use is regular and predictable, and when someone on site will genuinely take charge of maintenance. There is a middle answer people often miss. A long hire, taken across a season or a run of weeks, prices very differently from a series of single days, because the daily rate falls as the hire lengthens and the delivery is paid once rather than repeatedly. If your use is concentrated into part of the year rather than spread across it, that is usually the arrangement worth pricing before you consider buying.
