Tintagel stands on the Atlantic cliffs of north Cornwall, with the castle ruins split between the mainland courtyards and the island headland, now linked again by a footbridge across the chasm. The Old Post Office, a fourteenth-century manor house, sits in the village street, and the coast path runs north and south along some of the most exposed cliff in the county.

This is a site defined by its approach. Visitor parking is in the village, the castle is a steep descent and then a bridge away, and the walk defeats a good number of arrivals before they have seen anything. The site runs its own shuttle down the lane for exactly that reason. Staff, materials and conservation equipment travel the same route in reverse.

The village streets and the made lane are workable ground for a buggy on the gentler sections. The cliff steps, the headland and the bridge approach are not, in any conditions, and Atlantic weather here is a factor in its own right. English Heritage decide access on the monument.
